Runner’s High

Today’s long run could have gone really bad.

I did most everything right yesterday.

I compressed my legs (even slept in my sleeves)

Made sure to hydrate!

Ok…so those last two may not have been a good idea…but I think they may have been the reason my tummy was not happy this morning…

I woke up and was NOT feeling a run.

To make matters worse…this morning, when I got up for TWO seconds, Gusman ATE MY PRE RUN LARABAR!

Now that may seem like nothing to most people(and obvoiusly it isn’t…but I’m dramatic sometimes haha), but I like rituals.  Before every long run, I wake up, drink a cup of coffee,  eat a Larabar, and let my belly digest (I even tried a different bar earlier in the summer, and threw up during my run..not good).

Then Gus gave me that face and I decided I couldn’t be mad at him…I knew I needed to suck it up, eat something else, and get out there.

Well lucky for me, we still had that delicious California bread from Whole Foods.

So I ate a hunk of that and hit the road.

This morning I decided to hit Cherry Creak trail for awhile and it was a good choice.  Busy, but beautiful.  I took my first 5 miles slow (about 10 minute pace), because I knew I wanted to leave some in the tank.  I actually PUMPED Fall Out Boy for the first half of my run and before I knew it I was eating my chomps around midway.

To be honest, once I got over my bad self and hit the road, this ended up being one of the best long runs I’ve had this season.  Beautiful weather, beautiful trails…how can I complain?

I ended up feeling so good that I actually extended my long run to 10 miles…which I NEVER do.

And now, thanks to that run, I have a smile on my face that I canNOT get off 🙂  I LOVE RUNNERS HIGH!

Thank you running, for always reminding me why I keep coming back to you.

Maybe I will eat those cupcake bites before every run!

Question for the day:  When was the last time you had runner’s high?

90 minutes or Bust (Updated)

I was able to sleep in this morning, which my body more than needed.  I actually woke up to a text from my favorite running friend back home, “You can do it!”

Thankfully, Denver has dealt me an absolutely beautiful morning, cool and crisp.  62 degrees and sunny currently.

I’m finishing up my (pretty awesome) peanut butter chocolate chip lara bar, cup of coffee, and relaxing with my boys for a few minutes while it all settles.

90 minutes on the docket this morning.  I couldn’t ask for a much better morning for it, now I just hope my little legs and boy cooperate!

Update:  Edit to add, 9.15 miles done and done.  It gets hot fast here…I’ll be back with pictures and details later.  Farmers market time for this family!

Amazing

The post I wrote this afternoon came from a struggle I’ve been having for a runner most of this Spring/Summer season.

To be honest — it felt really good for me to use the blog as an outlet for my thoughts and frustrations.  I have loved everything about blogging in the short time that I’ve jumped into the game, but this was the first time that my putting it out there on my blog really helped me.

After I wrote that post, I felt like I  needed to be accountable for putting those words out there.  I can’t put it out there in the blogosphere, and then do nothing to work on it myself!

This afternoon — I took that inspiration and decided to put my words into action.

This afternoon I did my first speed workout outdoors. 🙂

Seems like something so small, but it really did feel good to just do it.

Workout for the Day

Run outside 🙂  Speed work:

  • 15 songs total
  • 2 songs warm up running
  • 10 songs, sprinting during the versus, recovery run through the rest of the song
  • 2 songs cool down running
  • 1 song walk

I didn’t take my Garmin as I wanted to just be outside and enjoy the run, with having to worry so much about speed/distance every moment.  But by using Gmap-pedometer, I was able to guestimate the run at about 5.7 miles in about 50 minutes, give or take.

As I was out on my run today, I brought my camera along in hopes that I would capture the moments that were a reminder to me as to why I need to get my butt outside.

As I started the run, it was spitting and raining.  I was beyond tempted to turn around and not risk the elements. . . but I stuck it out. And thank goodness that I did.

Ultimately the rain cooled down the warm summer temps and made the challenging run a bit easier.  What didn’t make the run easier:

A water fountain at song 12…that didn’t work.  Torture.

Ultimately — I came  home geeked out thanks to pushing myself, and feel a (hesitantly) new fervor for getting my butt outside.

 

Dinner

Ultimately, my run was the highlight of the evening, absolutely.  I came home right as Zach came home from his long mountain bike ride, so we were both running  on endorphin highs…and B.O ;).

With that said, we showered up and prepped a pretty solid dinner.  Lamb chops, garlic toast, and side salad for me/beans for Zach.

I enjoyed my chop with a wonderful, fresh salad and crunchy piece of toast to soak up the extra dressing and grease 🙂
