Last night Zach and I went to our favorite Sushi restaurant in Denver sushi hai.
Sushi Hai is a Japanese steakhouse and sushi bar in the Highlands neighborhood of Denver, right off 32 in a primo location.
Zach had fun trying to be a model for me . . .
Last night Zach and I sat in the dining room because we had a reservation, but they also have a bar area on the lower floors that really expands their floor space.
I love the warm towels they provide as you are seated. I know I’m not the only one who sometimes needs to get my hands dirty with sushi, right?
Last night I started our meal with my Summer favorite, a glass of Riesling
The service at Sushi Hai has been consistently a little slower than the norm, but I really think that’s because they cook everything fresh and made to order. Sitting near the sushi bar, we can tell that they are working up a storm, but when they’re busy, just be prepared to wait a bit for your food. Hence why I start right away by knowing what I want to drink. Everything is better with a glass of wine 🙂
Last night Zach and I went straight for the sushi, but they also have lots of good looking starters and entree dishes. We just can’t get away from their rolls when we go! Their menu is comparable in length to most sushi places we’ve been to with some unique rolls to their location.
Our favorite being the Surf and Turf
Surf n’ Turf (Shrimp tempura, avocado and Japanese aioli roll topped with seared filet mignon, garlic onion compound butter, green onions and sesame seeds)
That’s right, filet mignon on top of a sushi roll. I was weirded out by it the first time we ordered it, but it’s honestly our favorite roll there.
We also got a Mango roll, pictured above.
Mango Roll (Tuna and cucumber roll topped with avocado and mango slices with ponzu sauce and sesame seeds.) 8pc
A Chicksho Maki roll
Chicksho Maki (Tuna, jalapeno and cucumber topped with salmon, avocado and cayenne shoyu) 8 pc.
As well as a Las Vegas and Spider Roll
Las Vegas (Salmon, cream cheese, crab roll. Lightly tempura fried) 7 pc.
Shrimp Tempura (Tempura shrimp, cucumber, avocado and japanese aioli)
To be honest, the Las Vegas roll may have stolen the show for me last night. Not the healthiest roll at all, but full of flavor and WARM. Love it!
Can you tell Zach and I were there for awhile by the progressively darker pictures?
When we go out for sushi, we like to make it a progressive dinner. We like to do one or two rolls at a time, and make a little bit longer night out of it. We both are sushi fanatics, and will absolutely gobble up whatever sushi you put in front of us until we are beyond full. When we do it in stages, we enjoy it more and are forced to pace and think about whether or not we need another round.
Sushi Hai is perfect for this style of dinner. They are a little more upscale, and don’t mind if people hang out a little longer than maybe your normal sushi spot. We do pay a little more than other sushi spots when we go to Sushi Hai (2 drinks each and 5 rolls last night were 88 dollars), but nothing extreme. Especially if you consider the quality of the food your getting.
A few pointers from this lady if you’re going to try Sushi Hai (and you should)
- Order the Surf and Turf roll, even though it seems weird it’s amazing. I mean they are a steak house AND sushi restaurant.
- Be prepared to wait a little longer than normal for your food, but know it will be worth it
- They have a great wine and drinks list thanks to their bar, so take advantage if that’s your thing 🙂
- Order family style and try and many rolls as possible! They have a ton of great options
- Call me if you’re going. I’ll join 🙂 And I promise if we bring Zach, I won’t let him “ride the wave…”
And now for tonight, BRONCOS GAME! 🙂
Question of the Day: Do you like to do meals family style?
I like family style meals because I can sample more dishes. If steak is involved though, I’ll offer a bite and then possibly threaten to bite any other hands lol
I’m the same way! I want to be able to try as much as possible! 🙂 Unless it’s sweets, then I don’t share very well.
As long as I get to choose the dishes, I love family style and trying a bunch of things. 🙂
Haha — I always make sure I have a good seat — by the best dishes. That way I have easy access and can swat away other hands 🙂
Yummy! Your “inappropriate” picture of Zach was hilarious!
I love mango and strawberries in my sushi! If you like the Las Vegas roll and you are at Hapa Sushi sometime, you should try the Multiple Orgasm Roll — it is exactly that!
Hapa Sushi, we haven’t tried that place but I am intrigued now! Where is it?
I had a glass of riesling tonight, too. I wish I liked sushi because everyone else does. Unfortunately I don’t like avocado, cream cheese, mayo, or pretty much anything that goes into them besides the rice, fish, and wrappings. Bummer. That picture of Zach? Totally not riding the wave… lol
LOL — I’m glad I’m not the only one that thinks that!
